BARBARA ALBERT, born in 1970 in Vienna, studied theatre, German philology and communications before starting her studies in directing and screenwriting at the Film Academy Vienna (Filmakademie Wien). She has worked as an assistant director and editor for Richard Linklater among others as well as acted in various films, including MEMORY OF THE UNKNOWN (director: Natalie Alonso Casale) and CRASH TEST DUMMIES (director: Jörg Kalt). After the international success of her short films, Barbara made her first feature film NORDRAND. It was screened in 1999 at the Venice Film Festival, where Nina Proll won the Marcello Mastroianni Award as Best Young Actress. In the same year, Barbara Albert co-founded the production company coop99 alongside Martin Gschlacht, Jessica Hausner and Antonin Svoboda. She was also co-writer of the films GRBAVICA (Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2006), SLUMMING (in the Berlinale 2006 Competition), DAS FRÄULEIN (Goldener Leopard in Locarno 2006) and STRUGGLE (Cannes 2003). In addition, she wrote the screenplay for the film AUSWEGE (director: Nina Kusturica, Berlinale 2004, Perspektiven des jungen Films). Barbara Albert was also a co-producer for movies like LOVELY RITA (Jessica Hausner), DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE (Hubert Sauper), DIE FETTEN JAHRE SIND VORBEI (Hans Weingartner) and SCHLÄFER (Benjamin Heisenberg) among others. Furthermore, she has worked as a dramaturge, visiting professor and lecturer at various universities in Austria and Germany. In 2012, she won the Austrian Art Award for Film. From 2009 – 2011, Barbara Albert was the co-president of the Austrian Film Academy alongside Karl Markovics. Since March 2013, she’s been working as a professor for film directing at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF.
